In the vast symphony of life, humans are not separate from nature but an integral part of it. From an early age, I felt a deep connection to nature, particularly to animals. When life became overwhelming, I would retreat to forests, mountains, beaches, and paddocks, seeking the high vibrational frequency and healing energy that nature offers. Nature asks for nothing in return, except for our respect and protection. I vividly recall dancing in gardens, singing to trees and birds, and connecting with something far greater than my physical body. Humans and nature are expressions of the same divine energy, interconnected in ways we often forget.

At times when I became consumed with striving, working, and providing, I neglected to spend daily time in nature, disrupting this vital energy flow. This imbalance not only affected the environment but also my own well-being. Nature has always been a teacher, not just a resource, and when I’ve been disconnected from it, I’ve felt lost and fatigued. Beyond just spending time in nature, I have embedded the principles of sustainability into my daily life, both in my corporate career and at home with my five children, with the sole intention of respecting and protecting nature.

Humans as Nature, Nature as Humans

Modern life often promotes the illusion that we are separate from nature. However, from biological, spiritual, and psychological perspectives, we are inextricably linked to the earth. Our bodies, like the earth itself, are composed of water, minerals, and energy. The air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink are gifts from nature. When forests are felled, rivers polluted, or soil eroded, it directly affects us.

Every tree cut down, every polluted ocean, every extinct species is a fragment of ourselves lost.

This destruction affects not only the environment but also our mental health and social harmony. Just as the earth's health affects the climate, our inner health depends on the balance and harmony of the world around us.

Nature-Based Intelligence: An Ancient Wisdom

Indigenous cultures have long understood the deep, symbiotic relationship between humans and nature, viewing the earth as a living entity deserving of care and respect. This perspective, often overlooked in modern society, holds the key to re-establishing our lost connection with nature.

Nature-based intelligence is more than just understanding ecosystems; it’s about living in harmony with them. It teaches us to:

  • Observe cycles and patterns: Just as seasons change, so do the phases of our lives. Nature’s rhythms remind us of the importance of balance, patience, and renewal.

  • Embrace interdependence: Trees provide oxygen, bees pollinate flowers, rivers sustain life. Recognizing our dependence on nature fosters humility and gratitude.

  • Adapt and thrive: Nature teaches us resilience and adaptability, like a river carving its path through stone or a rabbit leaping through a forest.

Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature

One practical approach to applying nature-based intelligence is biomimicry—the practice of learning from and mimicking nature’s designs, processes, and systems to solve human challenges. Instead of imposing our will on nature, we can observe its 3.8 billion years of evolution to find elegant and efficient solutions. Biomimicry is not merely about copying nature’s designs but aligning with the principles that have allowed nature to thrive.

For example:

  • Ecosystem restoration: Biomimicry can guide us in creating regenerative systems that mirror the self-healing properties of ecosystems, like forests regenerating after disturbances.

  • Sustainable architecture: Inspired by termite mounds, architects have designed buildings with natural ventilation systems that reduce the need for artificial cooling.

  • Clean energy solutions: Wind turbines modelled after the fins of humpback whales have improved efficiency by mimicking the natural flow of air and water.

These innovations reflect the wisdom of nature, reminding us that when we align our designs with natural principles, we create systems that are not only efficient but sustainable.

The Connection Between Nature-Based Intelligence and Biomimicry

Nature-based intelligence and biomimicry are intertwined. At their core, both recognize that our survival and well-being are deeply tied to the health of the planet. Biomimicry is the practical application of this understanding, offering ways to design and live in harmony with the natural world.

By observing nature’s brilliance, we can solve many of our most pressing challenges:

  • Flood management: Wetlands naturally absorb excess water, teaching us how to design flood-resistant urban landscapes.

  • Waste reduction: In nature, there is no waste—everything is repurposed. Biomimicry encourages circular systems where human waste can be transformed into resources.

  • Mental health restoration: Spending time in nature, surrounded by its beauty and resilience, rejuvenates our minds and spirits, aligning us with nature’s rhythms.

Rewilding Our Hearts

When we destroy these natural systems, we lose not only their direct benefits but also the inspiration they offer for innovation and well-being. To heal humanity, we must heal nature—and vice versa.

Practical Steps for Reconnection

  1. Embrace nature as a guide: Observe how ecosystems self-regulate and apply these principles in human systems, from agriculture to architecture.

  2. Innovate with sustainability: Develop products and systems that honor nature’s efficiency, such as biodegradable materials inspired by leaves.

  3. Advocate for regeneration: Support biomimetic solutions like regenerative farming or energy systems inspired by photosynthesis.

  4. Reintegrate natural systems: Adopt designs that align with natural processes, such as creating urban spaces that mimic forest ecosystems.

  5. Rewild our hearts: Spend time in nature as participants, not just visitors. Walk barefoot, plant a garden, or sit under a tree.

  6. Advocate for balance: Support sustainable practices that prioritize long-term health over short-term profits.

  7. Educate and empower: Teach the next generation to see nature not as a resource to exploit but as a mentor to learn from.

  8. Honor small actions: Recycling, conserving water, reducing waste, and choosing eco-friendly products all contribute to a healthier planet.

Nature-based intelligence and biomimicry both emphasize a profound truth: the destruction of nature is the destruction of ourselves. But there is hope. By observing and learning from nature, we can innovate solutions that heal both the planet and humanity.

So let’s not just live on this earth but live as a part of it, embracing the wisdom that surrounds us. In doing so, we protect both the earth and our own well-being, finding harmony with the world that sustains us.
